I ONLY CAME TO USE THE PHONE
The Yashchin Company
Queens Theatre
Until 18 Mar 2008
Review by Rod Lewis
Told as a third person narrative, Gabriel Garcia Marquez’ tragic story is of Maria, who enters a run down
asylum to use the phone when her car breaks down. In the confusion of new arrivals, she is accidentally
admitted with them and thus begins a harrowing journey into madness.
Most of the six actors jump between characters regardless of gender. In the ensemble, Astrid Pill,
Stephen Noonan, Stephen Sheehan and director Netta Yashchin create a daunting, dismal world on the
relatively bare stage, but Susie Skinner is the stand out performer along with Paulo Castro, despite
problems with his projection and natural accent.
The ruins of the Queens Theatre is the perfect space to set the scene, and Alyuosis Lesson provides a
marvellous accompaniment on guitar.
